Hair Mistakes You Need to Stop Making

September 26, 2023 //  by Laura

If you ask any hair expert, there are a number of things that we would never recommend for the health and quality of your hair. Many people still do a number of these not knowing just how damaging they can be and how their hair can suffer in the long run from doing them…

Putting wet hair up / in a tight bun

Your hair is at its most fragile and vulnerable when it is wet, so pulling your hair up into any kind of tight hairstyle, especially a bun, is a bad idea. Your hair is like an elastic band, stretching even more when it is wet, so pulling at it and creating a lot of tension will lead it to snap and break at the places where you are tying it up tightly. Try to leave your hair down as it dries or dry it fully on the cool setting of your hair dryer before putting it into any kind of hairstyle to avoid breakage.

Not using heat protection

You would be surprised at how many people still continue to not use any form of heat protection when drying or styling their hair! Heat protection is like SPF for your hair, it is essential if you want to create a healthy barrier that prevents your hair from drying out and burning when using intense heat from your styling tools.

Sniping baby hairs

Cutting your baby hairs in any way will make them appear more noticeable with blunt ends and will lead them to grow back in shorter stumps that are harder to hide. As irritating as they can be, it is best to let your baby hairs to grow out naturally and soften them into your hair professionally when they get long enough. Until then, try using some mousse or oil to flatten them or a blow dry done right can help them settle.

Washing your hair daily

Washing hair daily means you will be washing away the natural oils that your scalp and hair need to be healthy. Using heat tools daily after washing will only dry out our hair more and cause damage to the hair cuticle making your hair feel rough. You will also develop more split ends over time with over-washing and overusing heat. If your hair is beginning to look greasy, try buying yourself a few days by using a small amount of dry shampoo or by styling your hair in an up-do to make it less noticeable. Your hair will thank you, trust us!

Pulling out grey hairs

As tempting as it may be, pulling out a grey hair will only produce a new one in its place. Surrounding hairs will not turn grey or white until the pigment in their own follicle cells die, so you’re not preventing anything by pulling them out! If you’re not ready to embrace the greys, try a root touch up powder or temporary colour chalk to conceal them until your next hair colour appointment.

Over conditioning your roots

Generally, conditioner should not be needed at the roots of your hair at all as your scalp produces natural oils to keep it moisturised. Too much conditioner on your roots will simply weigh down your hair causing it to look greasy quickly and lack any volume. Try to stick to using conditioner only on your mid-lengths and ends.

Using lemon juice to lighten your hair

This is a big no no! Lemon juice on your hair is going to dry out the hair shaft causing damage and leaving your hair feeling straw-like. Although it may be true that this method can help to lighten your hair in the sun, it is going to make your hair look so much worse in the long run through damage. If you are looking to change up your look with lighter hair, use a professional colour service to achieve the look with minimal damage. Contact us at Salon One for a hair colour consultation if you are looking to change your look or style!

At Salon One we are always keeping up to date on the best products and practises to help our clients have the healthiest hair possible.
